The 5 best psychologists in Canberra who will help you feel understood

Qualification and accreditation: I looked for psychologists registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), many of whom also held postgraduate degrees in clinical, developmental, or counselling psychology.

Range of services: I included those that offer individual therapy, couples counselling, child psychology, or psychological assessments.

Therapeutic approach: I considered whether the clinics offer a variety of evidence-based therapies, such as CBT and ACT, to EMDR and trauma-informed care. I also noted whether their approach seemed warm, inclusive, and person-centred.

Booking accessibility: I noted those practices with online booking, responsive communication, and reasonable wait times. I also appreciated when clinics offered telehealth options for remote or urgent support.

Client feedback and reputation: I relied heavily on reviews, testimonials, and client feedback on different health platforms to get a real sense of how clients experienced each psychologist or team.

Looking for a psychologist can be overwhelming, especially if you’re already feeling emotionally drained. There are so many things to consider, like specialties, fees, availability, and whether or not you’ll actually click with the right person.

Since I know how crucial that connection can be, I dove deep into researching Canberra’s most recommended psychology clinics. I scoured websites, read through testimonials, and took a good look at what each practice offers.

Whether you’re navigating anxiety or just want to understand yourself a little better, this list of psychologists might just help you find the support you need.

How much does a psychologist cost in Canberra?

The cost of seeing a psychologist in Canberra generally ranges from $160 to $250 per 50-minute session. Medicare rebates of up to $137 may apply if you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP.

What struck me the most about Strategic Psychology was the breadth of their team and how approachable the whole process felt.

With more than 15 experienced clinicians, each specialising in different aspects of therapy and assessments, there is a good chance of finding someone who really fits.

They offer therapy for individuals, couples, and children, using evidence-based techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

I like that they also provide thorough assessments for ADHD, autism, and learning differences. Their office space is warm and purpose-built, and they even run workshops on emotional intelligence through their principal psychologist, Nesh Nikolic.

Clients appreciate their accessible wait times, as most new therapy appointments roll out within two weeks, and the free Medicare rebate scheme via GP mental health plans.

Pros

  • Diverse team of psychologists
  • Wide range of therapy options and assessments

Cons

  • Wait times for some psychologists
  • Assessment services can be pricey

Feel to Heal Psychology immediately stood out to me for its gentle, human approach to mental health. Led by Nicola Cohen — a registered psychologist with a focus on children, adolescents, families, and young adults — the clinic radiates care.

Nicola blends trauma-informed techniques with a deep respect for neurodiversity, and it shows in everything from her writing to the calming feel of the clinic’s online presence.

The clinic offers a range of psychological assessments, including autism, ADHD, and learning difficulties like dyslexia and dyscalculia, and clients often speak about feeling truly seen and understood.

As a smaller team, wait times may apply, and Nicola’s personal involvement means booking availability is limited. However, past clients frequently commend her compassionate style and strong therapeutic connections.

Pros

  • Neurodiversity-affirming and inclusive
  • Multiple psychological assessments for children and adults

Cons

  • Limited availability due to a small team
  • No instant online booking

Absolute superstars!

“Absolute superstars, loving and caring for anyone/everyone in your family. Not only do they offer the best one-on-one services, their group sessions and classes are unreal. Thank you all for having such a positive impact on our lives ❤️.”

– Damien Wright, Google Review

Friendly and professional

“Nicola has repeatedly gone above and beyond to provide insight into what seems to us, a complex and confusing process! She is friendly, professional and we trust her insights and recommendations. Highly recommend.”

If you’re looking for a place that combines clinical expertise with a thoughtful, collaborative approach, Capital Psychology Clinic might be it.

The team covers a wide range of therapy and assessments, including autism, ADHD, educational profiles, behavioural development, and trauma.

I was especially impressed by how integrated their services are. They work closely with local GPs and specialists and operate right on the Canberra Hospital campus.

They also offer telehealth, but child assessments must be done in person.

Founders Dr. Eryn Davies and Jenna Keen have clearly built a practice focused on personalised, evidence-based care. One thing to note is that assessment waitlists, especially for children, can be long, and a GP referral is needed to book.

Pros

  • Expertise across therapy and specialist assessments
  • Integrated care pathway
  • GP referrals and allied health
  • Flexible telehealth options

Cons

  • Long assessment waitlists
  • Referral from GP recommended, which may delay booking

Always responsive

“Emilia has been instrumental in my health journey in such a short period of time. My well-being is at the forefront and the progress I have made is astounding. The girls at the desk are always responsive and a delight. Thank you to the entire team 🔆”

– Madison McClure, Google Review

Family-focused service

“The whole team at Capital Psychology Clinic are amazing! The administration staff are friendly, responsive and always willing to help you in anyway they can. The staff my family have and continue to engage with deliver a child/family focused service displaying professionalism and integrity. They have worked within a systems approach to empower my children to be the best people they can be. I would highly recommend Capital Psychology Clinic to families of the ACT.”

This centre shines if you are looking for warm, specialised care for your child. The Canberra Psychology Centre for Children and Families (CPCCF) offers therapy and assessments tailored to children and teens.

They also occasionally extend support to adults when it is appropriate. I liked how their website clearly outlines what to expect in therapy, because it takes some of the guesswork out for parents.

They also use well-regarded tools for assessments, including IQ, ADHD, and autism, and, notably, all assessments are conducted by fully registered psychologists.

It’s a thoughtful, family-first practice, though it’s best suited for early intervention or youth-focused therapy. Just remember that clients are encouraged to inquire directly via phone or email for details, and waitlists may apply.

Pros

  • Specialises in neurodevelopmental assessments
  • Child therapy expertise
  • Focuses on children and adolescents
  • Has multiple locations in Canberra

Cons

  • Lengthy assessment waitlists
  • Fees vary and require direct inquiry

Highly recommended

“My teenage son has been seeing Sheree Taylor for a few years and she has been magnificent. Sheree has been amazing at any time that we have needed her whether via face-to-face, online or exchange of emails. I cannot thank her enough for her expertise and support she has provided. I highly recommend Sheree if you’re in need of a psychologist. Very supportive and helpful service.”

– Gemma Morgan, Google Review

Always go above and beyond

“At a dark time in our life CPCCF have been amazing at working with us to help our daughter through a difficult time in her life. They are professional and punctual both during the sessions and the office staff who always go above and beyond to find appointments that work for us. Thank you to the whole team Sharee, Alex and Susie you have all helped us on this journey we couldn’t have done it without you.”

Think Mental Health gave me the impression of a place where flexibility really matters.

Whether you need therapy or even GP-guided care, their team of 20+ professionals — including psychologists, counsellors, psychiatrists, and a GP — makes it easier to access the right care under one roof.

They offer therapy, medication management, family counselling, and community services, such as Canberra Head to Health. I also like that they combine private and publicly funded services, giving people more options.

However, with such a large team of practitioners, navigating to find your ideal clinician may take time, and some of them operate only part-time. Still, the feedback online highlights the team’s warmth, helpful front desk staff, and the reassuring environment.

Pros

  • Multidisciplinary, comprehensive care
  • Walk-in/phone access
  • No referral needed
  • Medicare-funded

Cons

  • Part-time availability for several senior clinicians

Wonderful and non-judgmental

“The reception staff is so wonderful and non-judgmental. Bethany, the manager, is a great leader of her team. All of these people have been genuine… I have never experienced this level of professionalism before… so… please don’t hesitate to make an appointment. As for my psychiatrist… there are not enough words to express my gratitude. It is a tremendous privilege to be a patient here. And I have been blessed to have been with them for many years. Ty all, you know who you are!! And you have all kept me laughing, and my psychiatrist has kept me safe and alive. I value this practice… and I’m not embarrassed to share.”

– Ally Coll, Google Review

Thoughtful and very caring

“Miranda and Dr Louise are wonderful healthcare professionals. They’re thoughtful and very caring. Well suited to their professions. The front desk staff are incredible. Bethwynn, Bethany and Bridgett are so incredibly lovely and do so much to accommodate my appointments. They make the waiting room feel extremely comfortable and are very supportive and understanding. I’ve recommended Think MH to all my friends and colleagues.”
