A local guide for first-timers visiting NewActon, Canberra

My partner and I have made it a goal to go out every other weekend to spend some quality time together, so I’ve been on the hunt for fun places and new things to try. 

After a bit of research, I finally found something that seemed right up our alley! That’s when I came across NewActon. 

We were both no strangers to the neighborhood, but there were quite a few activities that we hadn’t checked out. 

So, I made this fun itinerary that involves us wandering around and just soaking up the creative vibe of the neighborhood. And I was like—why not share it with our readers too? 

Spoiler alert: by the end of this list, you’ll be packing your bags and booking a visit to the area. 

Where is NewActon?

NewActon is located just west of the city center (Civic), near Lake Burley Griffin. 

How to get to NewActon, Canberra

By car: NewActon is about 10 minutes from Parliament House and other major city landmarks. You can park at Wilson Parking – 25 Edinburgh Ave or at nearby street parking. 

By public transit: Take an ACTION Bus to stops near London Circuit or Edinburgh Ave, both within walking distance.

If using the light rail, alight at Alinga Street. NewActon is just minutes away. 

By foot: NewActon is an easy 5–10 minute walk from Civic (Canberra’s city center). It’s also close to ANU and Lake Burley Griffin. 

By bike: The area is bike-friendly, with paths connecting from the city and Lake Burley Griffin. You can also use Beam or Neuron e-scooters to get there quickly.
